Three Stars: Marenco Gets the Bat Going in Two Gonzaga Wins

YAKIMA, Wash. — Mason Marenco, a redshirt junior infielder from North Bend who will play for the Yakima Valley Pippins this summer, got his bat heated up this weekend.

Marenco went 4-for-6 in Gonzaga’s Saturday and Sunday games against Portland, including a double, two runs scored, two walks and two stolen bases. The Zags dropped the opening game of the series on Friday and are 6-5 overall this spring.

Kellen O’Connor (CSU Bakersfield) earned the save Sunday with one inning of relief work as the Roadrunners beat Pacific, 2-1. O’Connor struck out one. O’Connor also absorbed the loss Saturday as Pacific beat Bakersfield 8-5. The two teams split the four-game weekend series.

Landon Schirer (Angelo State) struck out the only two batters he faced in relief Sunday against Lubbock Christian, but the Rams lost the game 12-6. Angelo State is 11-2 this year.
