Springfield Tops Pippins in Back-and-Forth Contest

SPRINGFIELD, Oregon — In a back-and-forth game to start the final West Coast League series of the year for both teams, Springfield edged Yakima Valley 7-6 on Friday.

The Pippins took brief leads in the first and second innings, on an RBI single by Jace Phelan and a two-out, two-RBI single by Tommy Eisenstat, respectively.

But the Drifters responded both times, tying the contest with a run in the first and then taking their first lead with a four-run second inning off YV starter Payton Graham.

The Pippins tied the score 5-5 in the sixth on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Eisenstat and Phelan, but Springfield responded again with two runs off Pippins reliever Ryun Cross to take the lead for good.

While absorbing the loss, Cross also struck out a season-high nine batters.

Eisenstat finished 3-for-4, and Spencer Shipman went 2-for-5.

The two teams face off again at 6:35 p.m. Saturday.
