Three Stars: Garrett Makes MLB Debut

Just days after making the Tigers’ official Opening Day roster, Detroit’s Reed Garrett saw his first action on Friday with a one-inning appearance against Toronto.

Garrett (Pippins ’14) threw 16 pitches against the Blue Jay in the contest, which Toronto won 6-0. He got an infield pop out, a strikeout and a groundout to short.

Garrett became the first Pippin to make a Major League active roster last Monday. A Rule 5 draft pick in the offseason, Garrett must remain on the Tigers’ roster this season or be offered back to the Texas Rangers for $50,000 — half of what Detroit paid to acquire the right-hander.

Mason Wells (Pippins ’18) struck out six and walked four for Gonzaga against San Diego on Friday, which San Diego won 4-2 in 12 innings. Wells scattered five hits and allowed two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings.

The next day, Gonzaga beat San Diego 15-3. Trent Schulte (Pippins ’16) earned the victory with two innings of relief work, striking out one and allowing one earned run, though he did hit two of the eight batters he faced. For San Diego, Tora Otsuka (Pippins ’17) and Cody Jefferis (Pippins ’18) each went 1-for-3.

Schulte pitched 2/3 innings in Gonzaga’s 11-9 walk-off win on Sunday and allowed two hits.
