Sweets Rally in Ninth, Edge Pippins 11-10

Walla Walla rallied for seven runs in the ninth inning to beat Yakima Valley 11-10 on Sunday and avoid a sweep at Yakima County Stadium in the Battle of the Basin.

Trailing 10-4 in the final frame, the Sweets sent 13 batters to the plate off of three Pippins relievers. Walla Walla rapped four hits, including two doubles that both brought in runs, and took advantage of a hit batter and two walks. Two Pippins errors sandwiched around the first out of the inning kept the Sweets alive to rally.

The Pippins went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame.

The win prevented the Pippins from winning the Battle of the Basin, presented by Cascade Natural Gas Corp. The Pippins won two of three this series, and the Sweets won two of the three games in Walla Walla in June. It’s the second straight year that the sibling rivals have deadlocked in the series.

Beck Maguire led the Pippins with a 3-for-4, three-RBI performance, with a two-run single in the third. He also scored twice.

Maxim Fullerton finished 2-for-5 and Tommy Eisenstat was 2-for-6 for the Pippins, who took a 4-0 lead after two innings and, after the Sweets got on the board with three runs in the third, added three more runs in each of the third and fourth innings.

But the Pippins managed only three hits the rest of the way — no more than one in an inning — and only advanced one runner to second base.

Vicente Feliciano went 3-for-5 with three RBI to pace Walla Walla. Three other Sweets each collected two hits.

The Pippins close out the home schedule with a three-game series against the Cowlitz Black Bears beginning Tuesday at The Orchard. Yakima Valley then will finish the 2023 season with a three-game series at Springfield, Oregon, beginning Friday.
