Liss played his freshman season at Spokane Falls Community College in 2019, where he teamed with Pippins outfielder Christian Padilla. A native of Spokane, Liss had a 6–2 record and 2.08 ERA while striking out 66 strikeouts in 56.1 innings of work. He attended Ferris High School in Spokane, where he was a 2nd-team All-League pick as a senior in 2018.
