NightOwls Blank Sluggish Pippins, 12-0

NANAIMO, British Columbia — Three Nanaimo pitchers combined on a six-hit shutout as the NightOwls blanked the Yakima Valley Pippins 12-0 Wednesday at Serauxmen Stadium.

The NightOwls, who captured the three-game series also with a win on Tuesday, can sweep the series in the final game Thursday. Nanaimo scored the only run it needed in the third on a one-out RBI grounder by Brandon Hupe, then iced the game with four runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.

The Pippins, meanwhile, couldn’t get a rally going. Jace Phelan reached third with no outs in the second after back-to-back singles, but he was thrown out at home on a double play. In the third, Zack Blaszak reached third and Blake Balsz second on a balk with no outs, but an infield out, a strikeout and Blaszak getting tagged out in a pickle ended the opportunity.

The Pippins were shut down 1-2-3 in four of the next five innings.

Phelan went 2-for-3 for the Pippins, and Gabe Villaflor was 2-for-4.

Ethan Rivera hit a two-run homer for Nanaimo in the fifth, and Michael Easter blasted a three-run shot in the seventh.
