Nanaimo Stops Late Pippins Rally to Even Series

A one-out, bases-loaded Yakima Valley rally was cut short by a game-ending double play as the Nanaimo NightOwls beat the Pippins 6-4 on Wednesday at Yakima County Stadium.

The Pippins, who trailed the entire game after the NightOwls jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first, loaded the bases off reliever Andrew Pinedo on an error by the new pitcher and, after a strikeout, back-to-back hit batsmen. But Pinedo got Tommy Eisenstat to line into a 6-4 double play to end the threat.

Aaron Marsh drove in Nanaimo’s first-inning runs with a two-run, bases-loaded single off YV starter Ethan Salscheider, but the lefty avoided further damage by getting a strikeout and a double play to snuff the uprising. Ethan Rivera plated the NightOwls’ first run in the fifth on a single before an error and a passed ball allowed the other runs to score.

Payton Robertson, who pitched for the Pippins in 2021, earned the win with 5.2 innings of work, striking out three and walking three while allowing five hits. All four runs off Robertson were earned.

Salscheider took the loss, striking out three but walking five and allowing five hits in 4 innings of work. Three of the four runs he allowed were earned.

CJ Colyer went 2-for-4 to lead the Pippins.

Marsh and Michael Easter both finished 2-for-5 for Nanaimo.

Game 3 of the series starts at 6:35 p.m. Thursday at The Orchard.
