Carroll Becomes Pippins’ First-Ever First Round Pick

YAMIKA, Wash. – After one day of the 2019 MLB Draft, the Yakima Valley Pippins had two players, one former and one current, selected on the draft’s first day. 2019 Pippins outfielder Corbin Carroll was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 16th overall selection, while 2016 Pippins right-handed pitcher Ryan Garcia was selected 50th overall by the Texas Rangers.

Carroll, a 5-foot-10, 160-pound, left-handed hitting outfielder from Seattle, will join the Pippins this summer if he chooses not to sign with Arizona. A UCLA signee, Carroll has a decorated résumé, having played for Team USA at the U18 level, winning gold at the Pan-American Championships in Panama last November. Carroll also was the MVP of the Perfect Game All-American Classic Game last summer in San Diego, where he went 1-for-1 with a triple and two walks.

Garcia, a right-handed pitcher from UCLA, pitched for the Pippins in 2016, prior to his freshman year with the Bruins. He was an honorable mention All-West Coast League selection, pitching key innings as he helped the Pippins return to the playoffs. In 16 appearances, including 4 starts, that summer, Garcia had a 4-5 record, 2.16 ERA, and struck out 45 batters in 41.2 innings of work.
