YAKIMA, Wash. -- Though the weather in the Yakima Valley continues to give baseball fans fits, there's plenty of baseball being played elsewhere -- and former and future Pippins are making their marks.
Alex Guenette (2014, 2015), a senior catcher for UC Irvine this spring, hit his first home run of the season Sunday, a two-run blast, as the Anteaters beat Seattle University 3-2. Guenette is hitting .306 (11 for 36) with five RBI so far this year.
In the second game of Sunday's Irvine-Seattle doubleheader, incoming Pippin Chase Wells of Yakima went 3-for-3 with two RBI in Seattle's 8-2 win. In nine games so far this year -- including four starts -- Wells is batting .375 (6 for 16) with three RBI and a double.
Another incoming Pippin, Central Washington University's Mac Gaul, tossed a complete-game shutout in a 4-0 victory over Western Oregon on Sunday. In six starts this season, Gaul has a 4-1 record and a 1.70 ERA in 37 innings. He has all three of the team's complete-game performances.
Eli Morgan (2014) continued his impressive outings with a complete-game one-hitter as the Zags beat Pacific 4-0 on Friday. Morgan struck out 13 and walked none. To date, he's 3-1 with a 1.95 ERA in 37 innings pitched.
