Pippins add Naches Valley standout, CWU pitcher

12/19/2016 9:10 AM -

YAKIMA, Wash. – The Yakima Valley Pippins continue to build their 2017 roster, adding two Washington state standouts – Chase Wells of Yakima and Mack Gaul of Toledo.

Wells, a 6-foot, 190-pound freshman at Seattle University, is expected to play outfield for the Pippins. At Naches Valley High School, he batted .324 with 12 RBIs and two home runs last spring. As a pitcher, the left-hander was 2-1 with a 1.95 ERA in 14 innings.

“Any time we can add a local talent to our roster, it is priority No. 1 for us as a coaching staff,” Pippins manager Marcus McKimmy said. “Chase has a really good chance to see significant at-bats as a true freshman at Seattle U. I’ve had my eye on Chase now for several years, following his development, watching him grow physically, and – most importantly – watching him continue to be successful on every team he plays on."

Wells was a member of Naches Valley's 2014 Class A state championship team, which won the title on the Pippins' home field at Yakima County Stadium.

“The common denominator is he’s a winner, and I’m excited to see him in Pippins green,” McKimmy said.

Gaul, a 6-foot, 205-pound left-hander at Central Washington University, was 4-3 with a 2.13 ERA in 55 innings pitched for the Wildcats in 2016. The redshirt junior struck out 42 and walked 25.

“Every good baseball team needs to have a Mack Gaul,” McKimmy said. “He’s an experienced pitcher who led CWU in ERA and starts last year. He holds runners on extremely well, which is a big priority for me, and can be used in a variety of roles on our pitching staff. All he cares about is getting outs, and he’s good at it.”

The Pippins will host Victoria, British Columbia, on Friday, June 2, in the 2017 season opener, presented by Legends Casino. Season tickets and ticket mini plans are available for purchase at Hunky Shaw’s Team Shop, 12 S. Second St. in the historic Larson Building in downtown Yakima. Ticket packages also can be purchased by calling 509-575-4487 or online at pippinsbaseball.com.
